Learn to paint like the Old Masters!
Located on the Olympic peninsula in the picturesque Victorian seaport of Port Townsend, Washington, The Masters' Atelier is modeled after the classical realism training of the Old Masters and the American Impressionist Boston School Painters who trained in the French Academy of the late 19th century.
Progression of study is from sight-size cast drawing to still life, to figure drawing, portrait painting and figure painting guided by weekly personal critiques. More advanced students are offered the opportunity for developing imaginative narrative painting. Focus is on the "Visual Impression" as the Boston School taught it - paying simultaneous attention to the relationships of form, shape, value, color, line, and gesture in pencil, charcoal, pastel and oil paint.
Creative Picture Making is the vehicle for the training with a strong emphasis on composition and personal expression.
Craftsmanship of drawing and painting is derived in significant part from Seventeenth Century Dutch thinking of Old Masters such as Rembrandt and the 19th century French Academic painters combined with the plein air palettes of American Impressionists.
