 THE MASTERS' ATELIER

OF DRAWING AND PAINTING

About the Atelier

Paint Like the Old Masters

THE MASTERS’ ATELIER school of drawing and painting follows a course of instruction similar to that studied by the Old Masters. This discipline of art training, called the atelier system, is a rigorous alternative to the present day art school system where classical realism training, for the most part, is no longer available. The atelier system emerged in the 17th century from the old apprenticeship workshops of the Renaissance and was brought to this country by the Boston School painters who trained in the great ateliers of 19th century Paris. Apprentices at THE MASTERS’ ATELIER engage in the same methods and progression of study as the old masters to provide for the maximum development of creativity and at the same time to ensure mastery of the craft of picture making.

Learn to See

The secret of the old masters was their ability to see and render accurately the visible world. Therefore the student’s first aim at THE MASTERS’ ATELIER is to learn to see and represent nature’s facts. This is done with an orderly progression from cast, portrait, and figure drawing, to cast, still life, figure, and portrait painting utilizing methods and techniques of the Old Masters passed down from the master to the apprentice. Further study in imaginative painting is available for more advanced students.

Learn to Create Masterworks

The course of study at THE MASTERS' ATELIER includes demonstrations and discussions on various topics such as perspective, composition, anatomy, memory drawing, imagination and art history. Each student will be given their own studio space in which to work from life, where they will apply what they are learning about the fundamentals of art. Students meet regularly with the teacher to receive individualized encouragement and guidance in their artistic creations.

Student Testimonial

"Thank you for all your support and encouragement as I relearn how to see and how to draw. I love the results and my time drawing in your atelier is my favorite time of the day. I really appreciate your teaching style. It is warm, passionate, insightful and kind."

Nancy Lucas Williams

After earning her B.A. in Art from Whitman College, Nancy discovered the atelier system in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she studied at Atelier Lack with Richard Lack and at Atelier Prohl with Jim Prohl. She then completed her atelier art school studies at the Ingbretson Studio outside of Boston, with Paul Ingbretson. Both Paul Ingbretson and Richard Lack were students of R.H. Ives Gammel. R.H. Ives Gammel was instrumental in developing the atelier art school in America modeled after his apprenticeship with the Boston School Painters who largely trained in the late 19th Century at the French Academy.

THE MASTERS’ ATELIER is dedicated to equipping and training artists to use their God given talents for the glory of God.
